March's Meeting:
The Historical Society has been invited by the Sons of Confederate Veterans to attend a joint lecture by Dr. William E. Potter, Chief Historian and Curator of The circa History Guild. Dr. Potter (MA, PHD, adb) brings forty years of research, writing, and teaching experience to the History Guild Lyceum. He has held teaching positions in college and university programs as well as being a popular speaker at history conferences in the United States and Europe. He is a member of the Georgia Historical Society and is on the Board of Directors of the Conservative Caucus in Virginia. He is a specialist in American political and military history. His topic on March 2 will be “Church and State”. He will be answering the following questions: 1. Did the Founders intend to drive the Christian faith from the halls of Congress or the precincts of the Supreme Court? 2. Did Thomas Jefferson intend to make the United States a religion-free Zone? He has just finished talks on the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution for the SCV group and has three more lectures scheduled with them. Please make plans to attend this lecture to learn more about the foundations of this country and its rich history.
February's Update:
Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Joel Webb invited Historical Society members to view the restored Redd House. Mrs. Webb described the restoration project and everyone toured the house at their leisure after her presentation. The original interior walls, fireplaces, and beautiful pine floors were something to behold. Also, we would like to thank the granddaughters, Laura Redd, Ellen Redd McKenzie and brother-in-law Chris Collins members of previous owner Bryan L. Redd Sr. and Mary Byrd Redd for attending the meeting and relating stories about visiting the home as children. The Redd family bought the house in February of 1933 for $500.00. They related stories about the “scary root cellar”, what a wonderful gardener their grandmother was and how generously she gave away cuttings from her flowers and grapevines, and how much fun it was to come and visit their grandparents when they were children.
